There's a story I once read about an old lady who was in her kitchen, while her son was outside, working on a car. He had the car jacked up and was underneath it, when the jack suddenly broke and the car came down on him. Apparently, the mother came outside and managed to lift the car up enough for her son to escape from underneath it. Sounds ridiculous, huh? Several neighbours witnessed it but when asked about it, the old lady said she couldn't recall doing it.
I always think it's amazing what a human being can do when it's required of them. For example, you've heard that you can run a hell of a lot faster when being chased by a tiger, yeah? Or, that you can punch harder when in mortal danger, or whatever? It's to do with our perception of ourselves. In these situations, our instincts take over and we are free of any preconceived perceptions of what we're capable of. Free of these mental boundaries, we are able to act to our full potential. This also explains why the old woman in the above story couldn't remember what she'd done; it didn't fit in with her own perception of her capabilities, so when the situation was over and her son was safe, her perceptions of herself returned and actually blocked out what she'd done, because she didn't believe it was possible for her to have done it.
“The potential of the average person is like a huge ocean unsailed, a new continent unexplored, a world of possibilities waiting to be released and channelled toward some great good.” - Brian Tracy
Speaking of Mr. Brian Tracy, I would heartily recommend you read his book Maximum Achievement. It's worth a read, even for the most accomplished self-help skeptic.
This capacity that we tap into in our most intense, powerful or sometimes desperate moments I have come to affectionately refer to as 'Badass Mode'. I've flipped into it myself a few times; I tend to do it a lot in social situations. When I have to, I can become very confident, charming and forthcoming, even if I've been in a TERRIBLE mood all day. I also have to do it when I'm on stage; the principle of Badass Mode is in pressure, and it being necessary for us to act in a certain way to avoid a negative outcome. Humans are very adaptable when they have to be.

Free your mind, and all that.
